When some people hear The William Tell Overture or the words “Hi-Yo, Silver!” they immediately think of “The Lone Ranger.”  This program aired on television for many years, resulting in fans across multiple generations. 

 

“The Lone Ranger” first began as a radio show in 1933. Sixteen years later, it became a television show and the program’s heroes, The Lone Ranger and Tonto, became immortalized in western television history.

Gunsmoke
Television Show

Gunsmoke is the longest running western TV show ever! It was on the air for twenty years straight from 1955 - 1975.

 

James Arness became famous for his role as Marshal Matt Dillon and the cast that included Doc, Kitty, Chester and Festus became familiar names in households across America.

In December, 1903 when “The Great Train Robbery” was shown after a vaudeville act, no one knew what to expect.  Would the audience like it?  Would they even pay attention?

 

The answer was a resounding ‘Yes’!  After watching the movie the first time, the audience shouted “Play It Again” and “The Great Train Robbery” was played three more times before the theatre owners finally turned on the lights and made the patrons leave.

The Western film was born!  Movie history was made.

 

Film history was made that small, quiet night in a theatre in New York.  “The Great Train Robbery” became America’s first western movie and film fans have been enjoying western movies ever since.

Broncho Billy

The First Western Movie Star


On January 6, 1914, The San Francisco Chronicle newspaper crowned him “The King of the Movies.”  He was the most famous movie star of the time and his weekly Western films were enormously popular.  His name? Broncho Billy.  And from 1908 to 1915, he dominated the movie screen.

 

Every week, an estimated 11 million people watched him in nickelodeon theatres across America.  With every new film, his popularity grew.  In total, he made 148 Broncho Billy films and became the first Western movie star in America.
