Russell Crowe vs. Christian Bale In this Western Movie Thriller
“3:10 to Yuma” focuses on the relationship between two men on opposite sides of the law.
This 2007 movie gives Russell Crowe and Christian Bale the chance to bring their own spin to the original, 1957 “3:10 to Yuma” western that was released in 1957 and starred Glenn Ford and Van Heflin.
Russell Crowe stars as outlaw Ben Wade, who is being taken to the town of Contention in order to meet the train to Yuma, Arizona, where a speedy trial and hanging is surely awaiting him. Christian Bale stars as Dan Evans, the rancher who agrees to escort the notorious gunslinger to the train in order to get the $200 in reward money. Although the job is potentially deadly, Evans agrees to take it because he desperately needs the money and wants to prove himself to his family.
The ride to Contention, where the train is located, is loaded with danger. Wade’s gang is going to do whatever they can to help him escape, even if it means killing Evans. Plus, there is the looming fear of Indian raids in the area that could get them both killed.
Meanwhile a mental battle ensues between the men as the Wade uses psychological warfare against Evans. (It is easy to forget that the charming Wade can also be notoriously vicious.) As the clock ticks and the time gets closer for the 3:10 train to Yuma, the pressure grows. Who will win out in the end?

In his critique of this western, famed movie critic Roger Ebert stated “..the quality of the acting, and the thought behind the film, make it seem like a vanguard of something new, even though it’s a remake of a good movie 50 years old.”
» Tom Cruise was originally going to star in “3:10 to Yuma” when Sony Pictures held the exclusive rights to the western. But, when the studio decided to shop the film, Cruise left the project. Russell Crowe, who had eagerly wanted to star in the western, was immediately picked to replace Cruise in the starring role.
