|Genre(s)||Western, Comedy, Romance|
In This Light-Hearted Western, Cable Hogue’s Well is His Place for RevengeDirected by famed western movie director, Sam Peckinpah, “The Ballad of Cable Hogue” is reputed to be one of Sam Peckinpah’s own favorites. It’s not what you would expect from a director like Peckinpah who is well-known for his more violent, gritty westerns like “The Wild Bunch.”
In this western, the hero is an odd-ball character named Cable Hogue (Jason Robards) who stumbles onto a water well and spends his days vowing revenge against the two friends who left him in the desert to die. Hogue managed to survive the deadly desert heat by miraculously finding water just in time. His good fortune gets even better when he realizes that he can make money from his discovery by providing water and travelers on the stagecoach line.
Hogue also finds romance with his well. When prostitute Hildy (Stella Stevens) is thrown out of the local town, Cable Hogue lets her stay at his home and watering stop. The two of them gradually fall in love.
Preoccupied with vengeance, Hogue seems to instinctively know that one day he will again encounter his evil friends and he relishes the idea of killing them (but, of course, not before torturing them!).
Meanwhile, the West as Hogue knows it is changing, thus befitting the name “The Ballad of Cable Hogue.”
• “The Ballad of Cable Hogue” is reportedly one of director Sam Peckinpah’s favorite films. Sam Peckinpah went $19 million over budget and took longer than expected to finish this film. Because of the budget and schedule fiasco, Warner Brothers did not hire Sam Peckinpah to direct any more movies after this one.
• Sam Peckinpah, also directed these other famous western movies: The Wild Bunch, Ride the High Country and Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid.
• Many critics refer to “The Ballad of Cable Hogue” as a “Death of the West” film because it shows the transition from the old west to modernization.
