“Brokeback Mountain” Depicts Forbidden Love in the Big Country of the West
Ang Lee’s 2005 film “Brokeback Mountain” rendered for the big screen a well-known short story by Annie Proulx about the complicated, long-running love between two male ranch hands in the American West.
Heath Ledger plays Ennis Del Mar, a 19-year-old who hires on to tend the sheep herds of Joe Aquirre (Dennis Quaid) in their summer pasture in the high country of Wyoming’s Big Horn Mountains. His partner is the equally youthful bull-rider Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal), who camps close to the animals to protect them from coyotes and other predators while Ennis cooks and manages supplies. Romance between the two men blossoms during their isolated summer, despite the fact that Ennis is engaged to Alma Beers (Michelle Williams).
As the saga of “Brokeback Mountain” unfurls, the two men go their separate ways, with Ennis and Alma having children and Jack eventually marrying a fellow rodeo competitor, Lureen Newsome (Anne Hathaway). But they continue to see each other—ostensibly for fishing trips—and confront all the emotional turmoil of forbidden love, set in the context of prejudice.
Groundbreaking in its depiction of same-sex romance and featuring strong performances from the full cast, “Brokeback Mountain” is also notable for its sweeping Western scenery, from verdant subalpine meadows to vast and rolling plains. Lee won Best Director at the 78th Academy Awards, during which the film also took top honors in the Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Original Score categories.
