“Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” was a huge box office success in 1969. Taking in over $30 million in the United States and Canada alone, this movie was the highest grossing western ever released at that time.

Today (accounting for inflation), “Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid” is still one of biggest selling westerns ever made and is a cowboy classic.

Butch Cassidy (Paul Newman) and Sundance (Robert Redford) are leaders of the “Hole in the Wall” gang. Their specialty is stealing. After robbing multiple trains, the owner of the Union Pacific railroad line decides that he has had enough and decides to hire a super-posse to track them down and kill them.

Finally realizing that the super-posse is formidable and not going away, Cassidy and Sundance decide to move to South America. They take Sundance’s girlfriend, Etta Place (Katharine Ross) with them. Their plan is to start a new life above the law that doesn’t include robbing trains and banks. But old habits die hard and Butch and Sundance find themselves robbing banks once again.

Moreover, the Union Pacific railroad super-posse continues to hunting for them in South America and they have also enlisted the help of the local authorities.

This classic western won four Academy Awards, a Golden Globe Award, and a Grammy Award. Also, “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” was selected for preservation in the prestigious U.S. Library of Congress National Film Registry.

» After the success of the gangster movie “Bonnie and Clyde” in 1967, movie studios began looking for other films to make where the concept of a likeable and glorified pair of outlaws could be used. Most of the movies that they made using this template were gangster films, but Warner Brothers took the concept further and decided to make this western about the famous outlaw duo Bonnie and Clyde.

» Writer William Golman spent almost eight years working on the screenplay for “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.”. He did a lot of research in order to make the film as accurate as possible. Facts in the movie that are true are:

Burt Bacharach, the composer, won four major awards for the movie soundtrack: The Academy Award, Golden Globe Award, BAFTA Award and Grammy Award.

» The real name of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid’s gang was “The Wild Bunch” but because “The Wild Bunch” movie was being released around the same time, the studio decided not to use this name in the film. Instead, they changed the outlaw group’s name to “The Hole in the Wall” gang.

» Because of their successful pairing in “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid”, Paul Newman and Robert Redford did another movie together. It was the movie “The Sting” which was also a major box office success.
