Tom Selleck plays Rafe Covington, a drifter with honor, who will keep his word, even when the consequences may be deadly.
While bound for San Francisco on a vessel, Rafe Covington (Tom Selleck) and his best friend Charles Rodney experienced a twist of fate when Rodney takes on the ship’s captain in a scrappy fight that leaves Rodney near death. Rodney, on his deathbed and sensing his last moments on earth, makes Covington promise that he’ll look after his wife Ann (Virginia Madsen) and his Wyoming ranch.
In an act of revenge, Covington beats the sea captain, and heads off to Wyoming with two other shipmates to honor his word to Rodney. What he finds is a deserted ranch and Rodney’s wife Ann (Virginia Madsen) questioning his motives. Moreover, Covington finds himself having to deal with Bruce Barkow (Mark Harmon), a shady and wealthy bar owner who seems to run the town and have a strong romantic interest in Ann.
Covington’s mission is clear—to protect and serve – which Tom Selleck does with a silent strength reminiscent of other great western characters.
