The “John Wayne-John Ford Film Collection” contains eight handpicked movies by this famous actor-director team.  Five of the movies in the collection are western movies including two of John Wayne’s most famous westerns – “The Searchers” and “Stagecoach.”  Three of the films in this special collection are war movies based during World War II sagas.

 

John Wayne stars in all of the movies with celebrated director John Ford directing all of them.  The collection contains movies spanning an 18 year period of filmmaking.  The oldest film is “Stagecoach” which was made in 1939 and made John Wayne a movie star.  The youngest film is “The Wings of Eagles” which was released in 1957 and is based on a true story.

About the Films in this DVD Set
The Searchers (1956) is considered by many western film fans to be the greatest western movie ever made.  John Wayne stars in this film as Ethan Edwards, a man who spends many years determined to get vengeance against the Comanche who killed his relatives and took his niece. The Ultimate Collectors Edition of “The Searchers” is included in the “John Wayne – John Ford Film Collection.”  This special edition contains behind-the-scenes photographs from the film and a Warner Bros. companion guide.  It also has a special documentary about the making of the movie with an introduction by John Wayne’s son, Patrick Wayne.

 

Stagecoach (1939) is the western movie that made John Wayne a movie star.  In this film, a group of stagecoach riders find themselves nervously traveling through the desert because they fear being attacked by Geronimo and his warriors. The two-disc special edition of “Stagecoach” is included in the “John Wayne – John Ford Film Collection.”  This DVD contains many bonus features including a documentary profile about the relationship between John Wayne and John Ford entitled “John Wayne – John Ford: The Filmmaker and the Legend.”

 

She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949) is about Captain Nathan Brittles (John Wayne) who is in his final week as a cavalry officer on the frontier and is determined to end his military time peacefully. However, his last days turn out to be more eventful that he imagined.

 

Fort Apache (1948) stars John Wayne as a Captain Kirby York who watches as his ambitious and arrogant Commanding Officer (Henry Fonda) leads the troops into a massacre.

 

3 Godfathers (1948) is about a group of three outlaws who rob a town bank and then escape by fleeing to the desert. While trying to elude the law, the three men encounter a pregnant woman who makes them agree to be godfather to her child.

 

They Were Expendable (1945) is about an American PT boat squadron fighting the Japanese in the Philippine waters after the bombing at Pearl Harbor.  The movie is based on the true story of Lt. John Bulkeley who won a Medal of Honor in World War II.

 

The Long Voyage Home (1940) is based on four one-act plays by Eugene O’Neill. The film is about a group of seaman who must come to grip with their fear and emotions as they sail across the dangerous seas with a cargo full of dynamite.

 

The Wings of Eagles (1957) is the true story of Frank "Spig" Wead, a Navy pilot who became a screenwriter after being paralyzed in an accident. The real Frank Wead was a friend of the movie director John Ford and was also the screenwriter for “They Were Expendable,” another one of the films in the “John Wayne – John Ford Film Collection.”
