Flaming Star is a Tense Western Drama starring Elvis Presley
Elvis Presley delivers a fine performance as a conflicted cowboy in “Flaming Star. Many critics have hailed this western as the singing icon’s best dramatic role on the movie screen.
After a family traveling home is attacked by the Kiowa Indians, the relationship between the local settlers and the Native American tribe is shattered. It seems like only a matter of time before a war breaks out between them.
In the middle of this growing animosity is the Burton family. The father’s second wife Neddy (Delores Del Rio) is Kiowa and they have a son together named Pacer (Elvis Presley). Father Pa Burton (John McIntire) also has another son from previous marriage named Clint (Steve Forrest).
The local settlers question the family’s loyalty to the community while the Kiowas question Pacer and his mother’s loyalty to the tribe. Both sides are putting pressure on them to choose who they will fight for.
Will the “Flaming Star” of death force the issue?
• Don’t let the singing during the first 10 minutes of the “Flaming Star” fool you. This movie is not a musical! Elvis only sings two songs – the title song and another one named “A Cane and a High Starched Collar.” After these songs in the beginning, Elvis doesn’t sing any more and it’s all pure acting. In fact, there are many who consider Elvis’s performance in this western as his best film acting role.
• “Flaming Star” was Elvis Presley’s second western movie. The first western that Elvis Presley starred in was “Love Me Tender,” which is also the very first movie that the King of Rock ‘n Roll made. In total, Elvis Presley made 31 films of which four of them are westerns:
Love Me Tender (1956)
Flaming Star (1960)
Stay Away Joe (1968)
• The screenplay for “Flaming Star” was originally written with Marlon Brando in mind for the role as Pacer (which went to Elvis Presley). Nunnally Johnson, the writer, wanted Marlon Brando and Frank Sinatra to play the brothers in the western. The role that he wanted Frank Sinatra to play (Clint Burton), went to Steve Forrest.
• The director of this movie, Don Siegel, also directed these other famous western films:
The Duel at Sun Creek
Death of a Gunfighter
Two Mules for Sister Sara
Elvis Presley stars in “Flaming Star” as a half-Kiowa cowboy who finds himself and his family caught in the middle of a brewing war between the local settlers and Native American tribe.
Considered one of (if not the best) performance by Elvis Presley in a movie, “Flaming Star” also stars Barbara Eden and Steve Forrest.
