Sergio Leone and Clint Eastwood Team Up Again in “For a Few Dollars More”

As he did in “A Fistful of Dollars,” Clint Eastwood portrays a fast-thinking, fast-drawing, and mysterious gunman in the Sergio Leone’s “For a Few Dollars More,” another of the Italian director’s much-celebrated, much-parodied Spaghetti westerns.

In “For a Few Dollars More,” Clint Eastwood plays a bounty hunter who, despite his loner tendencies, joins forces with another of his ilk—Colonel Douglas Mortimer, played by Lee Van Cleef—to take down a vicious but anguished outlaw chief, El Indio (Gian Maria Volonté). Reward money is certainly a motivating factor for the “Man With No Name,” but Mortimer has his own personal vendetta against El Indio. Sprawling across the vast, dusty frontier of the U.S.-Mexico borderlands, the bounty hunters skirmish with El Indio’s well-armed gang as psychological traumas are explored and violent standoffs tensely staged.

In addition to the striking performances of the leads, a colorful supporting cast rounds out the action—including the famed German actor Klaus Kinski, in the role of one of the bandits named The Hunchback.

As with Sergio Leone’s other homages to the American Western genre, “For a Few Dollars More” features raw-boned scenery and another gripping score by composer Ennio Morricone.

• After the phenomenal box office success of “Fistful of Dollars,” director Sergio Leone and actor Clint Eastwood teamed up again to make “For a Few Dollars More.” It cost an estimated $600,000 to make this western and handsomely paid off with almost $15 million in box office sales.

• Lee Van Cleef became an international western movie star after his role in this movie. Over ten years prior to starring in “For a Few Dollars More,” Lee Van Cleef performed in another classic western, “High Noon” as henchman Jack Colby. Van Cleef’s role in this western didn’t have any lines but it did bring him some recognition and led to him getting other roles in westerns like the classic “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.” However, it wouldn’t be until Sergio Leone cast him in “For a Few Dollars More” as the tough but decent Colonel Mortimer that Lee Van Cleef that he would become globally famous in western movies.

• “For a Few Dollars More” was filmed in Spain and most of the actors in this western were Italian and didn’t speak fluent English. Therefore, the majority of the movie’s dialogue was dubbed in later.

• “For a Few Dollars More” is one of three spaghetti westerns that have famously become known as the “Man With No Name” trilogy. All three movies star Clint Eastwood and were directed by Sergio Leone. The other two westerns in the trilogy are “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” and “Fistful of Dollars.” These spaghetti westerns are credited with catapulting Clint Eastwood and Sergio Leone into international superstars.

• Sergio Leone’s first famous spaghetti western “Fistful of Dollars” was heavily based on Akiro Kurosawa’s Japanese movie “Yojimbo.” However, “For a Few Dollars More” was uniquely a creation of Sergio Leone who wrote and directed the western. Therefore, some movie critics consider this movie to be a pivotal Sergio Leone film because it displays his emerging directorial style.

• Sergio Leone’s daughter, Francesca Leone, appears as a baby in this movie. (She is Tomaso’s baby.)
