When his Native American wife is raped and killed, U.S. Marshal Matt Morgan (Kirk Douglas) is determined to get the two men who did it. Fortunately, Morgan is able to get one of the killer’s horses containing a custom saddle. Morgan recognizes the saddle and knows that it belongs to an old friend named Craig Belden (Anthony Quinn).
Belden has become a big cattle baron in a neighboring town. Morgan assumes that the two men responsible for his wife’s death work for him. So he decides to return the saddle in person, find out from Belden who the men are and then arrest them. But, to Morgan and Belden’s horror, it is Belden’s only son, Rick Belden, who is one of the killers.
Belden adamantly refuses to turn over his son and vows to kill Morgan if he tries to get him. But Morgan is determined to get justice and adamantly states that he plans to leave town with Belden’s son and the other killer on the "Last Train from Gun Hill."
The old friends are now enemies. Who will prevail?
• The director of this movie, John Sturges, had just experienced enormous success with his other Western film, “Gunfight at O. K. Corral”, which starred Kirk Douglas. Because of this success, Sturges decided to do this western, “Last Train at Gun Hill” with Kirk Douglas again.
• The location scenes for “Last Train from Gun Hill” were filmed near Tucson, Arizona. The town of Gun Hill, however, was created on the Paramount Studio lot.
Screen legends Kirk Douglas and Anthony Quinn star in this suspenseful western drama.
Marshal Matt Morgan (Douglas) tracks down the murderer of his wife and discovers that he is the son of an old friend, Craig Belden (Quinn). Belden tries to get Morgan to leave town peaceably without his son, but Morgan refuses. But in a town owned and controlled by Belden, it may cost Morgan his life, especially since he is resolved to leave town on the "Last Train from Gun Hill" with Belden's son as his prisoner.
Kirk Douglas and Anthony Quinn are old friends who become enemies when Douglas is determined to bring Quinn's son to justice for murdering his wife.
The only way Douglas can succeed is by taking the son out of town on the "Last Train from Gun Hill," but everyone in town is owned by Quinn and willing to kill.
