Will Lockhart (James Stewart) delivers supplies to a storekeeper in the small town of Coronado, New Mexico. The owner is a beautiful young woman by the name of Barbara Waggoman (Cathy O’Donnell).
Unbeknownst to Barbara Waggoman and the rest of the townspeople is Lockhart’s real motive for making the delivery. He wants to find out who has been selling repeating rifles to the Apache Indians. The reason is because Lockhart’s brother was a Calvary officer who was massacred by Apache Indians using repeating rifles. Lockhart wants revenge for his brother’s death.
The town of Coronado, however, has its own set of problems. It’s deep in Apache territory and is controlled by rich rancher, Alec Waggoman (Donald Crisp) , who has a mean, psychopathic son named Dave Waggoman (Alex Nichol). When Will Lockhart decides to load his empty wagons with salt one day, he has a terrible encounter with Dave Waggoman and they become enemies.
Lockhart is determined to stay in the area, find the gunrunners selling the guns, and deal with the Waggomans.
