Clint Eastwood, in a Spirited – and Spiritual — Western
“Pale Rider,” starring Clint Eastwood, was the top-grossing western movie of the 1980s.
In “Pale Rider” Clint Eastwood plays “Preacher,” a mysterious man who comes to a gold mining camp shortly after it was attacked by horsemen, who turn out to be from a larger mining company nearby that is trying to take all the land (and the gold) for itself. Preacher, who sticks to himself, manages to organize the miners to fight against the invaders, with the help of Barrett (Michael Moriarty), the one local who refuses to be driven off his rightful claim by the larger mine.
The film’s title refers to a line from the biblical “Book of Revelation” (Chapter six, verse eight) that talks about a pale horse (one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse) that is ridden by “Death” and is followed by “Hell.” Thus, this western takes on a spiritual dimension as well.
“Pale Rider” was the first western directed by Clint Eastwood since “The Outlaw Josey Wales” in 1976. This classic western won a Golden Spur Award from the Western Writers of America for Best Screenplay.
Renowned film critic Roger Ebert describes “Pale Rider” as “a classic western of style and excitement.” It is a must-see western for Clint Eastwood fans!
• When Clint Eastwood directed “Pale Rider”, he had been directing movies for some time, making this the twelfth film directed by the star. Most western fans are familiar with Clint Eastwood as a spaghetti western actor in movies like “Fistful of Dollars” and “For a Few Dollars More.” They (like many movie fans) do not know about Clint Eastwood’s vast directorial experience which began over thirty years ago.
Clint Eastwood started directing movies in 1971 after he became a movie star for his roles in the Sergio Leone spaghetti westerns “Man with No Name Trilogy” of films. To date, Clint Eastwood has directed 35 movies, some of them westerns, some of them drama or crime films. Clint Eastwood’s most famous directed westerns are “Unforgiven”, “High Plains Drifter” and “The Outlaw Josey Wales.” For the classic western “Unforgiven,” Clint Eastwood won both a Best Picture and Best Director Academy Award which is highly-coveted, rare accomplishment.
• “Pale Rider” won a Best Screenplay award from the Western Writers of America.
