Eric Fleming and Clint Eastwood are Cattle Drivers in “Rawhide”

Eric Fleming and Clint Eastwood star in “Rawhide,” a western series about a group of cowboys driving cattle on the long, arduous journey to the Kansas City cattle market.

Although the basic premise of the show is the cattle drive, the real stories are of the people and situations that the men encounter during the drive. People in distress, thieves, snake oil salesmen and trouble seem to be a natural part of the adventure, making for interesting storylines and memorable characters in every episode.

Eric Fleming stars trail boss Gil Favor, who is a no-nonsense cowboy whose word is the law and who has the gun-skills and muscle to back it up. His right-hand-man is Rowdy Yates (played by Clint Eastwood), a youthful and cocky second-in-command who is loyal to Favor and determined to help make the drive successful. The cast also includes a funny and cantankerous cook named Wishbone (Paul Brinegar), his helper Mushy (James Murdock) and other cowpokes and trail hands.

There are many famous people who made guest appearances on “Rawhide” during its multi-year run, including Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Mercedes McCambridge and Barbara Eden to name a few.

“Rawhide” won four Western Heritage Bronze Wrangler Awards for Best Western Television drama from 1961 to 1965. Its theme song of the same name was also a recording hit for singer Frankie Laine and was the theme song used for the entire run of the show.

A well-written and acted television series, “Rawhide” was the first major starring role for actor Clint Eastwood, making him a star on the small screen before he ultimately became a star on the big screen.

• Frankie Laine, the award-winning singer of the theme song “Rawhide,” appeared in an episode of the show with his wife on November 18, 1960. Laine and his wife Nan Grey appeared in the episode named “Incident on the Road to Yesterday” as long-lost lovers. The episode is number six of season three.

• Shortly after Rawhide left the air, Eric Fleming (who stars as Gil Favor) was accidentally killed while filming a TV movie in South America. According to reports, Fleming was filming a scene for the adventure movie “High Jungle” in Peru. In the scene, Fleming was in a boat on the Huallaga River and accidentally fell into the surging waters which rapidly swept him away and he drowned. He was only 41 years old.
