“The Outlaw Josey Wales” stars Clint Eastwood in a Gritty, Post-Civil War Western

In “The Outlaw Josey Wales”, Clint Eastwood directs himself as a farmer who, after his family is murdered by pro-Union Jayhawkers, joins a group of Confederate rebels to fight against the Union.

The Civil War ends and Captain Fletcher manages to convince some of the Confederate rebels to peaceably surrender to the Union army. Josey Wales (Clint Eastwood) refuses to surrender and then discovers that the Union soldiers plan to execute his friends, not offer them amnesty. Fueled by murderous revenge, Wales kills many of the soldiers with a Gatling gun thereby making him a notoriously wanted man – dead or alive – with a huge bounty on his head.

As Wales attempts to evade the soldiers and other bounty hunters hot on his trail, he attracts a handful of companions, including an elderly Cherokee ham (Chief Dan George, of “Little Big Man” fame) and the survivors of a Kansas family that includes a pretty young woman named Laura Lee (Sondra Locke).

A crack shot and a wounded loner, Wales nonetheless finds himself playing the unlikely role of hero more than once as he deals with one trial after another.

Featuring splendid scenery–from misty, forested hills to the spare, yawning vistas of the Southwest–“The Outlaw Josey Wales” tracks Josey Wale’s desperate flight in gritty, absorbing detail.

Selected for the U.S. Library of Congress National Film Registry in 1996, “The Outlaw Josey Wales” one of the few westerns to be given this special honor.

• Originally, the plan was for Clint Eastwood to star in “The Outlaw Josey Wales” and have Philip Kaufman direct the western. As director, Philip Kaufman did all of the pre-production work and co-wrote the screenplay with Sonia Chemus. However, after Kaufman began shooting the western, a rift developed between Kaufman and Clint Eastwood that led to Kaufman being removed as director of the film. Clint Eastwood took over and became the director. The Director’s Guild of America intervened in the dispute and made Clint Eastwood pay a fine. Also, the Director’s Guild passed a new rule stating that a director cannot be replaced by a current cast or crew member of a film. The new rule is now referred to as the “Eastwood Rule.”

• Clint Eastwood and Sondra Locke (who plays Laura Lee) became romantically involved while making “The Outlaw Josey Wales.” Their relationship lasted for fourteen years and during this time they made multiple movies together.

• “The Outlaw Josey Wales” is based on a novel by storyteller Forrest Carter. The book was initially released under the title “The Rebel Outlaw: Josey Wales” in 1973. Two years later, it was reprinted and given the title “Gone to Texas.” In 1980, it was released again as “The Outlaw Josey Wales.” The author, Forrest Carter, has been a controversial writer because he used the pen name Forrest Carter and intimated that he was a Cherokee Native American. But, it came out later that his real name was Asa Carter, who was a well-known white segregationist and Klansman from Alabama.

• In 1996, “The Outlaw Josey Wales” was selected for the U.S. Library of Congress National Film Registry. Only 25 films are selected each year for this special distinction and honor.
