Burt Lancaster, Lee Marvin, Woody Strode, and Robert Ryan Are “The Professionals”An all-star cast anchors Richard Brooks’ 1966 classic western, “The Professionals”, which was filmed in some of the Southwest’s most breathtaking locations, including Death Valley in California and the Valley of Fire in Nevada.
The Professionals are a group of four adventurers-for-hire. They are Bill Dolworth (Burt Lancaster), an expert in explosives; Henry Rico Fardan (Lee Marvin), a hardened soldier-for-hire; Jacob Sharp (Woody Strode), a scout who shows particular mastery of the bow and arrow; and Hans Ehrengard (Robert Ryan), a cowboy wrangler. Their job? To rescue Maria, the wife of a wealthy rancher named J.W. Grant (played by Ralph Bellamy), who has been kidnapped and taken to Mexico. The danger? High. The notorious bandit who has kidnapped her, Jesus Raza (Jack Palance) has an army of loyalists who far outnumber them and will be watching the entire countryside very closely for strangers.
Undaunted by the odds against them and attracted to the lucrative reward money, “The Professionals” take the job and head South of the Border. Through wits and strength, they successfully conduct a daring raid on Raza’s hideaway. However, after they get away with Maria, they discover that there’s more to the job than they expected. More of the story unfolds as Raza and his associates chase them in deadly pursuit.
Nitty-gritty action and a stellar lineup of big-name actors have made “The Professionals” movie an enduring classic western. The film garnered three nominations at the 1967 Academy Awards—for best cinematography, best director, and best writing—and two at that year’s Golden Globes, for best drama and most promising female newcomer (Marie Gomez).
