Bat Masterson was a western tv show that aired from 1958 to 1961. Unlike other western programs of the time, the hero of this show, Bat Masterson (Gene Barry) was not a gunfighter. Instead he was a gentlemanly type who preferred to use his brains and cane for protection.
A charmer who roamed the western countryside, Bat Masterson had a way with the women. His trademark outfit was a black derby, gold tipped cane and fancy vest. He looked like he belonged in the East instead of the West. Nevertheless, he had a personality that women found irresistibly charming.
The television show, "Bat Masterson" was actually based on the real life of William Barclay "Bat" Masterson. Of course there is more legend, than fact, but what do you expect from a western? It's the legend that makes it so interesting!
• "Bat Masterson" is one of the few western TV shows that was based on a real person. The real William Barclay "Bat" Masterson had many different careers including jobs as a buffalo hunter, deputy, gambler and newspaperman. The fact that he had to walk around with a cane was something that was a myth for the television show.
• The "Bat Masterson" theme song was very catchy and memorable. It was sung by Mike Stewart.
