Interesting Facts

• "Gunsmoke" originally started as a radio program in 1952. William Conrad played Marshal Matt Dillon for the radio show.

• John Wayne was the first person asked to play the role of Marshal Matt Dillon for the "Gunsmoke" television show. Wayne declined because he didn't want to do a weekly tv series. However, he recommended James Arness because he thought that Arness was perfect for the role of Marshal Dillon. Wayne knew Arness because he had used him for small roles in some of his western movies like "Hondo." It turns out that John Wayne was right because James Arness became famous for his role as Marshal Matt Dillon - a role he played for the entire 20 year period that the show was on television.

• "Gunsmoke" was originally only 30 minutes long when it started airing on television in 1955. After six seasons, the show was enormously popular and thus was expanded to an hour.

Awards

• "Gunsmoke" the television series won the 1967 Western Heritage Bronze Wrangler Award for best Fictional Television Drama.

• For six years in a row, from 1971-1976, "Gunsmoke" won the Western Writers of America Award for Best TV Script.
