Recently, the 2013 Academy Award nominations were announced, and we are pleased to see a western in contention for the Best Picture Academy Award.

The western “Django Unchained” was nominated for five Academy Awards this year: Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Christoph Waltz), Best Original Screenplay (Quentin Tarantino), Best Cinematography and Best Sound Editing.
Although this movie has been controversial because of its frequent use of the “n” word, “Django Unchained” is a western that has managed to do what few westerns have done – get nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award and do extremely well at the box office. As of January 10, 2013 “Django Unchained” has earned over $114 million at theatres, which is sure to increase, especially now that the movie is an Oscar contender.

The last western movie to get nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award was in 2010 when “True Grit” starring Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon was recognized. “True Grit” was nominated for 10 Academy Awards that year, but unfortunately did not win any of them.

The last western movie to win the Best Picture Academy Award was Clint Eastwood’s “Unforgiven” which won in 1992. That year, “Unforgiven” won four major Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director (Clint Eastwood), Best Supporting Actor (Gene Hackman) and Best Film Editing (Joel Cox). It was a good year for westerns!

We hope that 2013 turns out to be another great year for westerns at the Academy Awards, with “Django Unchained” winning all four of its Oscar nominations. Congratulations to all of the cast and crew of this film!
